Smart Docklands
Smart city testbed in Dublin’s Docklands, funded by Dublin City Council and CONNECT (Trinity College Dublin). Enables trials of smart city technologies and engages local communities in learning about emerging tech.
Smart Docklands
During my internship at Smart Docklands, I gained valuable real world experience while improving the UX of The Urban Quest. It’s a scavenger style app that highlights the smart tech of Dublin’s Docklands.
Smart Cities Urban Quest: Adventure in the Docklands
An interactive experience using augmented reality, games and quizzes to help people discover how cutting edge technologies are shaping the cities of tomorrow.
Key Learnings
UX Design, user testing and user flows
Smart city technology, working with an interdisiplinary team, community engagement, communication, collaboration, professionalism and networking skills
Digital illustrations, video making and the news letter
Process
Reviewed the Urban Quest app and noted potential changes and improvements
Collected user’s feedback from last year’s Urban Quest
Gathered insights from that and identified the most common challenges faced when using the app
Suggested several concepts to improve the user experience
Insight
The main issue that the team had with the app was that users weren’t reading and absorbing all the information about the smart technology.
My role was to find a way for people to take in this information easily.
Concepts: Tech made simple
Drawings: illustrations to explain the tech simply.
Street interviews: fun fact interviews with the public.
Videos: informational videos on the smart tech.
Drawing Concept
We decided to go with the simple drawing concept, as users found it the easiest way to understand the smart city technology and engaged with the drawings more than with the other concepts.
We sent out use case templates to the creators of the smart city technology to fill out. I then simplified all of these techy use cases.
I made storyboards from these simplified tech use cases.
